CDR Chris Cooke, USN, Retired – Biography
Chris Cooke is a tax, estate planning, and business attorney living and working in San Diego. Son of a WWII sailor, he was born at the Newport Naval Hospital, Newport, RI and grew up in Washington, D.C. and Bowie, MD. Chris attended Archbishop Carroll High School in Washington, D.C and graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1981. He attended flight training in Pensacola and earned his wings as Navy helicopter pilot. He was assigned to San Diego helicopter squadrons from 1982 until 1995.
Chris served on active duty from 1981 until 1989, and in the Navy Reserve from 1989 until his retirement in 2009. During that time, he was assigned to numerous squadrons and staffs, amassing several thousand flight hours in the SH-2 and SH-60 helicopters. He received numerous awards, citations, and campaign ribbons. Needless to say, any pilot in the armed forces looks fondly back on “those magical days,” when he or she was entrusted to protect the country with some of the most expensive and awesome machines our country deploys to maintain the peace and security of our great nation…
A Commitment to Community
While on active duty, Chris attended the University of San Diego School of Business. He was awarded the degree of Master of Business Administration in May 1988. The following year, Chris left active duty and began a nineteen year career working for major US and international corporations. During that time, Chris attended the University of San Diego School of Law, and was awarded the Juris Doctorate degree in 2003. In 2007, Chris began his law practice in San Diego.
Over the years, Chris has volunteered his time as a Naval Academy Information (Blue and Gold) Officer (12 years), Scoutmaster (10 years), and USNA Alumni Association Trustee (3 years). From 2005 to 2007, he was president of the San Diego Chapter of the Naval Academy Alumni Association. He now serves as pro bono counsel to the Chapter. He is active in several legal and defense industry associations including the American Bar Association, California Bar Association, San Diego County Bar Association, National Defense Industrial Association, Armed Forces Communications & Electronics Association, and San Diego Military Advisory Council.
Dedication To Family
Chris has four children. His oldest, LT (j.g.) Sara (Cooke) Guenther, NC, USN, is a Navy nurse assigned to the Naval Medical Center, San Diego. She is a pediatric specialist. Chris’ older twin son, 2nd LT Sean Cooke, is an Army officer assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Sean is an Army combat engineer, trained in both advanced demolition and field tactics. Chris’ younger twin son, 2nd LT Patrick Cooke, USMC, is a Marine officer currently assigned to The Basic School, Quantico, Virginia. He aspires to be a combat infantry officer. His youngest son, Colin, is a chemistry major at Northern Arizona University. His ambition is to be a military physician.
Chris enjoys spending time with his faithful companions, Bob the Australian Cattle Dog, and Jade the Black Lab, both retired performers from the Pet’s Rule show at Sea World, San Diego. Both expert Frisbee dogs, they provided thousands of hours of entertainment to audiences over their long careers. A former competitive swimmer, Chris regularly competes in Olympic-distance triathlons.
